A new North Nottingham

A £5 million project to boost the power network in Watnall and Kimberley is nearing completion.
The project, which started in 2015, involved the construction of a new primary substation at Watnall as well as upgrading equipment at a major substation in Moorgreen. Five kilometres of underground cables have also been laid between the two substations to further safeguard supply reliability to around 10,000 customers in and around Watnall, Kimberley and Awsworth.
“The investment ensures that we can provide a high level of service to these areas in the long term by improving the infrastructure and security of our electricity network,” said Paul Davies, Team Manager for the area.
The next stage of the project, which is due to start on July 24, will involve the installation of around 2km of 11,000 volt underground cables in the area.
James Street in Kimberley will be closed on Sunday July 24 and for the next six Sundays (until Sunday August 28) while the new cables are being laid by our contractors Morrison Utility Services & Integral, however signed diversions will be in place.
There will also be temporary traffic lights which will move along Newdigate Street in Kimberley as the cable laying progresses from Monday July 25 until Friday September 2. The cable laying will then progress onto Main Road in Watnall where temporary traffic lights will be in place.
Paul added: “Our aim is to keep any disruption to an absolute minimum, and we have been liaising with Nottingham County Council Highways Department to agree on a cable route which creates the least disruption for traffic flow in the area.
“We have arranged to carry out the majority of the work during the school holidays, when traffic flow is expected to be lower, and we have written to home owners and businesses along the route to advise them of the work. We will also be speaking with local bus companies about our plans.”
The project forms part of our commitment to provide a consistently high level of service to customers. We will invest around £7billion on our electricity network between 2015 and 2023.
