Leicester gets new cables

Work has started to relocate a substation and 500 metres of underground electricity cables on Evington Road in Leicester.

The cable laying element of our project is set to begin on Saturday October 15 when underground cables are to be installed by contractors Morrisons Utility Services.

This will require closure of the eastbound lane of Evington Road near the junction of London Road so that the work can be undertaken safely. It is expected to take four days to complete, during which time a signed diversion will be in place.

Additional work to install a new substation on Evington Road will take a further two weeks to complete. This will not affect the carriageway.

Neil Barratt, WPD’s Leicester City Team Manager said: “Our aim is to keep any disruption to an absolute minimum, and we have been liaising with the City Council’s Highways Department to agree on a cable route which creates the least traffic disruption.

“We have arranged to carry out the work during the school holidays, when traffic flow is expected to be lower, and we have written to home owners and businesses along the route to advise them of the work. We have also been in touch with the local bus companies about our plans.”
