Latest update for customers on the Isles of Scilly

As many of our customers may be aware, at the beginning of March the sub-marine cable feeding the Isles of Scilly was severely damaged by an unidentified boat. At the time of the incident, customers would have had a brief interruption to their supplies before the generators on the island restored electricity. This supply has been maintained throughout.

Since then, WPD has employed a specialist cable recovery vessel to investigate the damage and prepare a plan to carry out full repairs.

Unfortunately working at least 10 miles from land in the sea, this repair is both complex and challenging as we have to work around tide times and deal with storm force gales.

The initial investigation stage is complete and we are now waiting for a settled phase of weather to commence the repairs, which we hope will be Friday this week.

We want to reassure all customers that there is a constant supply of fuel for the generators and we have provided an extra 2 megawatts of power through mobile generators should it be required.

We extend our thanks to all customers for their patience and support as we work to restore this mains cable to the Isles.
