Sparkle safely

Bonfire organisers are being urged to ‘look up – look out’ to check for power lines and electrical apparatus when planning firework displays and building bonfires.

Our Safety advisers are urging people to always check for any electrical apparatus or power lines and to keep bonfires and fireworks well away from them.

WPD’s Safety and Training Manager, Lee Wallace said: “Safety is our number one priority and people should always be vigilant and carry out some quick checks of their surroundings so that everyone stays safe when displays take place.

“If you’re installing temporary structures or using ladders always ‘look up – look out’ and avoid overhead lines or electrical apparatus. Electricity can jump gaps, so it’s very important that everyone stays well clear.

“Smoke and heat from bonfires and fireworks can also cause damage to electrical equipment and may affect power supplies causing wider disruption,” added Lee.

If bonfire organisers become aware of any damage to our electrical apparatus or of items that have gone into one of our substations, they should always keep well clear and call 0800 6783 105. One of our engineers will then attend to ensure everyone stays safe.
