The Dementia Alliance

Continuing our theme of Dementia awareness as part of Dementia Action Week, Derby-based Contact Centre Team Leader Andy Jackson spoke about how he’s recently become involved with the local Derbyshire Dementia Alliance and how he intends to use local relationships to benefit customers.

One of Andy’s key roles at WPD is to support the company’s Priority Services Register (PSR). The PSR offers extra support to customers who may find power cuts more worrying and challenging, such as people with Dementia.

Andy’s team delivers the PSR data cleanse project, updating PSR customers’ records every two years by contacting them and ensuring we have the correct information and understand their requirements.

In order to promote PSR and target as many eligible PSR customers as possible, Andy recently attended a local Dementia Alliance meeting to help present to the group about WPD and the PSR. He is now an active member of the Alliance and is to attend future meetings, talking with representatives from local authorities, charities and support agencies about Dementia awareness initiatives.

“Since joining the Dementia Alliance it’s given me a greater appreciation of the different types and stages of Dementia. There’s a very common misconception that people with Dementia suffer just memory loss but it can affect many other aspects such as mobility and perception. In the Contact Centre we’re speaking to customers a lot of the time and by understanding more about Dementia you can better identify with a customer with Dementia and support them, which can be very important if they are experiencing a power cut.”

Andy’s networking through the Dementia Alliance is reaping more company benefits, with the Contact Centre planning to work with the Alzheimer’s Society to undertake some specialist call taker training. “The more knowledge we can gain and share as a company can only help customers in the long run and I’m looking forward to building our association with the Dementia Alliance to help achieve that,” said Andy.
