Brecon pupils get set for stage show

Teenagers with learning disabilities are busy rehearsing for a new stage production at Brecon’s Theatr Brycheiniog.

All are pupils from the town’s Ysgol Penmaes School and they are currently involved in a series of rehearsal workshops which will culminate in a stage production at the theatre on June 28 and 29.

The production, Matthew’s Passion, is the story of a 12-year-old boy who finds and befriends an injured bird. It is being performed as part of Theatr Brycheinog’s Education Outreach programme, which is sponsored by Western Power Distribution (WPD), the South Wales electricity provider.

The production also features Theatr Ffynnon – the only theatre company in Wales working solely with people with learning disabilities. They train and develop artistic skills, and encourage independence and confidence through the medium of drama and artistic expression.

Andy Eagle, Director, Theatr Brycheiniog explained: “The drama education workshops are proving a great success, and greatly benefit the students, while the £2,000 cash support from WPD ensures the workshops’ continuation over the next twelve months.”

Gareth Thomas, WPD Distribution Manager for East Wales said: “We are delighted to support Theatre Brycheiniog in such a worthwhile initiative. It is obvious that the teenagers are thrilled to be taking part in the workshops and are looking forward to their forthcoming production.”
