Fire-damaged woodland benefits from tree planting

New trees have recently been planted to help restore woodland in Cwmbran destroyed by fire.

Parts of Blaen Bran Community Woodland were damaged by the blaze last year – prompting a group attached to the woodland and representatives from the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) to launch a tree-planting initiative.

The planting took place over two days and was funded by Western Power Distribution (WPD), the South Wales electricity business.

A wide variety of native species of trees and shrubs were planted to help the wild life diversification of the area. These included elder, dogwood, spindle, blackthorn, broom, dog rose, sessile oak, wild cherry and hazel.

Jonathan Singleton, BTCV Conservation Officer said: “This is a beautiful area of mixed woodland overlooking Cwmbran with many different habitat areas encouraging a wild variety of wildlife. It is very important to maintain this wood for future generations to enjoy.”

David Parsons, of the Blaen Bran Community Woodland Group said: “The tree planting has been a great help. Without the support of BTCV and WPD this planting would not have been achieved within the foreseeable future.”
