Nature reserve benefits from tree planting

Volunteers from the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) have joined forces with Bath nature conservationists to plant trees on a local nature reserve.
The Wellow Brook Nature Reserve is benefiting from the tree planting initiative which has been undertaken by the B TCV and the nature reserve’s conservation group.
The work has been funded by electricity business Western Power Distribution (WPD).
A hedge line of native British trees and shrubs, including hawthorn, blackthorn and hazel was planted to act as an animal proof barrier between fields, while another area was dedicated to growing a mixed broad leafed woodland including oak, ash and birch. In addition, an apple orchard on the site was improved with the planting of some additional varieties.
“The volunteers enjoyed the day and the opportunity to contribute to the improvement of this important wildlife habitat,” said Ben Hall, BTCV project officer.
“It was a great day. We all enjoyed coming down to Wellow Brook and getting some important tree planting done – and the spicy bean soup we were given at lunch time made the initiative even better!”
