Digging in to tell a story

Children from Exwick Heights Primary School in Exeter pulled on their boots and picked up their spades to do some tree planting recently.

Thanks to a donation from local electricity company Western Power Distribution, youngsters from the school eco club have been able to purchase some new trees which have an oriental theme and have been chosen to ‘tell a story’ at the front of the school.

Lorraine Dunn, Head teacher at Exwick Heights said: “At the front of the school we have a detention basin which is the first thing parents and visitors see when they approach the school entrance. It was a rather dull area and ripe for some planting and now thanks to this donation our entrance will now have a green facelift.”

The school eco group along with members of the school council put some ideas together and came up with an idea of a planting theme with special plants from China that tell a story. Trees include Maidenhair, Bhutan Pine and Snakebark Marple.

Lorraine added: “The planting has created a difference already and we know it will have a positive impact on the whole school and visitors alike. Our eco club will continue to look after the trees with help from the grounds-man and we know from a hole in the ground it will grow into an area of special interest with a theme.”
