Gibbons Way goes green

A housing estate in the middle of North Cornelly near Bridgend has been given a green coloured facelift, thanks to a donation of trees from Western Power Distribution.

As part of the electricity company’s ‘keen to be green’ scheme, the site on Gibbons Way, which fell into disuse following the demolition of a shopping precinct, has been transformed with flower beds and mature trees.

The project, launched by the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers, was set up as an employment initiate aimed to provide the unemployed with the necessary skills to get back to work.  The Family Employment Initiative project is funded by the European Social Fund, Communities First and Valleys to Coast.

Work began on the project back in the summer and has been a huge hit with local residents. As a result, a group of volunteers are hoping to run a local market and the housing association are now looking to make the site an official village green space, something which is music to the ears of BTCV worker Sasha Ufnsowska:

“It’s hard to think this area was once a shopping precinct and it would be fantastic if the housing associations plans do happen. Hopefully our work is just the start and things can keep getting bigger and better.”
