Youngsters in a spin with Jon!

Gloucestershire and England pace bowler Jon Lewis helped disabled youngsters to improve their cricket skills at a special academy recently.

Run by Ability Sports in conjunction with local electricity company Western Power Distribution, the cricketer who has recently returned from Australia, helped youngsters with fielding, catching and bowling techniques at the day long event at Filton College.

Ability Sports is a Bristol based charity that aims to bring an inclusive approach to sport for young people across the South West regardless of ability through a range of professional coaching sessions. The charity is working with Western Power Distribution to target children and young adults with disabilities, learning difficulties or other social inclusion problems in its multi-sport partnership programme.

All youngsters who took part in the day received a special certificate presented by Jon, who was also accompanied by fellow Gloucestershire fast bowler Steve Kirby. 2007 is Jon Lewis’s benefit year and Ability Sports is the official beneficiary of his fundraising.

Jon explained:‘I am always keen to support organisations that are helping to break down barriers through sport and to encourage everyone to have a go. A coaching event like this not only gives all those youngsters who take part a real opportunity to improve their cricketing techniques but also helps social skills and self confidence.’

Mike Robey, Charity Development Director and Founder of Ability Sports, added:‘We are delighted to have received financial support from WPD for this cricket academy but also from Jon Lewis who has so generously given his time and interest to our organisation.’
