Guides go under cover

Guides at a newly formed troop in Bristol can look forward to life under canvas for many years to come.

The 101st Horfield troop was relaunched 18 months ago by ex guides Sarah Marriott of Westbury-on-Trym and Ruth Hopton of Horfield. The two women had attended the unit when they were younger but it folded in 2003. They decided to re-launch the Guide unit and 15 girls joined initially. Now 18 months on the unit is fully established with 28 girls enrolled – and a waiting list!

Taking the Guides camping was a priority so the girls set about raising money with cake sales and other activities. But they were still short of funds to buy a tent so Ian Woods, a father of one of the Guides who works for local electricity company Western Power Distribution, approached the company for financial support.

Now the Troop has a brand new eight man tent and the girls have already enjoyed one camp and have plans for many more nights under the stars next year.

Unit leader Sarah Marriott said:’Camping is such an integral part of the Girl Guide experience so we are thrilled to have this brand new tent. It is such a boost to the troop and we know that it will benefit guides in this Bristol unit for many years to come.’
