Remedial works on Scilly Isles supply

Later this week, we will be carrying out some remedial works to the 33,000 volt mains cable, supplying the Isles of Scilly.

You may recall the challenging repair which had to be scheduled around tide times and unpredictable weather fronts using a specialist vessel 70 metres down, on the sea bed.

Jon Nesbitt, WPD’s Distribution Manager for the area explains: “We want to reassure customers the repair to the cable is complete but these additional works should reduce further incidents like the one created in March by a boat’s dropped anchor.

“This reinforcement work will involve the application of 64 tonnes of gravel and three, 5 tonne mattresses. This will provide additional protection to the repaired joint and cable which provides mains electricity to our customers on the Island.”

While this work takes place, WPD will have to switch our customers back on to the generators for up to 48 hours so the work can be done safely. Customers’ supplies will not be affected by this work. This work is reliant on the weather so we will keep you updated of any changes to these plans via the media and our website.
