Environmental objectives

The environmental objectives established by WPD cover five key operational aspects of the business, all of which have a potential impact on the environment, our customers and the future sustainability of our company:

  • Corporate
  • Transport
  • Buildings
  • Networks
  • Customers and community

For each operational aspect we have a number of associated objectives which take account of the potential environmental risk and significance, as identified from our corporate Environmental Aspects Register.

For example:

Corporate: We produce an annual business carbon footprint helping us to assess the impact of our use of energy and carbon and which supports our future energy and carbon policies and strategies.

Transport: We aim to recycle and reduce the level of waste oil that we produce through the introduction and use of longer life synthetic oil and we actively encourage WPD staff to reduce journeys by road and air where practicable.

Buildings: We aim to ensure that all our new and significantly refurbished buildings achieve a minimum BREEAM (British Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) rating of ‘Very Good’ - see our Case Studies section.  We also intend to install renewable generation or renewable heat (photovoltaic cells, wind, biomass or ground source heating) on all of our new buildings.

Networks: By actively working with our contractors, local councils, the Highways Agency and government we aim to increase the use of recycled and stabilised materials in excavation works to reduce the level of waste being sent to landfill.

Customers and community: As part of our sponsorship programme we actively support various community initiatives related to the environment, we also operate a very successful and well established tree planting scheme in association with TVC (The Conservation Volunteers) – See our keen to be green section.
