60 Second Interview

As part of our regular series of interviewing our staff, we caught up with Church Village Projects Engineer Jack Lawthom.

What’s your career background?

I joined WPD through the Power Academy as a graduate trainee and on completion of the scheme, progressed to Primary System Design in Cardiff. I was fortunate to join Projects East Wales in 2014.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

We take great pride in our work and get a feeling of satisfaction when a project is completed, especially where a substation has been completely transformed and modernised to provide another generation of service to customers and our colleagues who will use and maintain it.

What’s the biggest challenge?

Managing so many different aspects of a construction project can be challenging and I find it hard to switch off after work, but with the right support, it ensures the project runs efficiently.

What does your role entail?

Working in construction, I have overall responsibility for delivery of the project, including project and financial management, management of safety on site and compliance with CDM regulations. I’m responsible for a small team of fitters, and carry out the role of SAP and testing and commissioning engineer.

What do you like best about your role?

The best part of my job is the support we get from everyone in the team – without this, I couldn’t do my job.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I have recently joined a local triathlon club and train with them regularly. I hope to compete in my first sprint distance race this month.
