A magical vanishing act

Engineers have just improved the views in the Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The Cannock-Rugeley team has removed 48 poles and 3.5km of overhead line from the area around the Marquis Drive visitor centre. The project also included rebuilding three pole-mounted transformers.

Technician Garry Powis said: “It was an interesting dig because of the history of the area. It was used for training in both world wars and as a prisoner of war camp in World War Two. It also turned out there were some medieval earth banks there that we had to avoid.

“Practically every jointer and linesman in the Cannock-Rugeley team has worked on the job so it’s been a real team effort.”

The team wanted to thank Wayleave Specialist Donna Bayliss for the months of work she undertook on the project, which is part of our ongoing initiative to enhance protected landscapes.
