Be Smart - Become an Apprentice

A last call has been made for apprentices in parts of the Midlands before the final closing date for applications on Sunday, 24 March.

Apprenticeship opportunities are still available in the Hinckley, Grantham and Northamptonshire areas to work as overhead linesmen, jointers or fitters. There are currently eight vacancies in the Hinckley team area, which covers locations such as Coventry, Warwick, Tamworth and Coalville.

Alec Judge, of Melbourne, Derbyshire, signed up 18 months ago to the craft apprenticeship scheme, which is open to anyone over the age of 16 interested in embarking on a career in an innovative, fast-paced and customer-focused industry.

Alec was working as a mechanic when his girlfriend, who worked in the WPD contact centre, suggested he apply for the scheme.   Alec, who now works as an overhead linesman and covers his hometown of Melbourne, said: “I liked the idea of being in a different place everyday – and I still do. I had never worked at heights before so that was a bit nerve-racking at first but I’m used to it now.   I will definitely be doing this job for a few years yet.”

The job is a real challenge but it is also very rewarding – and the money’s good!"

Ben Tyler, from Melton Mowbray, who is training to be a fitter, decided to sign up instead of going to university – and has no regrets.   Ben, who also covers his home town as part of his patch, said: “I am in a different location everyday doing something new and exciting. There is so much variety. One day, I might be working on equipment in an underground car park in the city centre; on another, I can be at a job on a golf course in Skegness, watching the waves come in!

The great thing is that I could do absolutely anything after this. There are so many career possibilities - and I should never have to leave WPD because all the opportunities are here!”

Henry Edwards, from Brixworth in Northants, is from the third generation of his family to work in the electricity industry. Henry, who has almost completed his linesman apprenticeship, followed his father and grandfather into the electricity industry. His dad currently works as a technician for WPD.  Henry, whose patch includes the village where he grew up, said: “My dad has always had a positive experience and wanted me to have a good job, too. I would definitely recommend the apprenticeship to anyone who enjoys working outdoors and likes being hands-on. The job is so varied – one day, you might be installing a transformer; the next, you are servicing equipment or tree trimming.

One of the biggest benefits is that there are opportunities to progress and move on into new roles.”

Ian Brooks, Distribution Manager for South Lincolnshire, said: “We are looking for able and highly motivated people to join the WPD apprenticeship scheme.  Our people are at the heart of our business and the apprentices of today will be the skilled staff of tomorrow, safely delivering outstanding levels of customer service.”

Apprentices can expect an excellent range of benefits including competitive salary rates and in-depth training and development.  Successful applicants will follow a two to three year training programme, where they will learn from experienced craftspeople and study for a recognised qualification.

Applications can be made online until Sunday 24 March.   Further information is available in the Apprentice section of our website.
