Case Study: Helping Mr H with home adaptations

This month, thanks to Care & Repair and Nest, Mr H was aided with home adaptations through two grants totalling £538.32.

Mr H is 73 years old and recently moved in with his daughter due to a number of falls in his home. Mr H’s daughter contacted Care & Repair (https://wecr.org.uk/) as her boiler had broken down and they had no heating or hot water. Care & Repair gave details about the Nest grant and had followed this up during the home visit. Nest then explained that Mr H and his daughter would be eligible for a grant as his daughter was eligible in her own right for the scheme.

During the home visit, concerns included the staircase which only had a rail on one side, and the high concrete external steps. Mr H was also struggling to get in and out of the bath at his daughter’s home and so agreed it was worth referring to the Community Occupational Therapy team for an assessment.

Following the home visit, a number of home improvements were made to help Mr H. A replacement boiler was installed by Nest and a number of radiators were improved. A mopstick and a newell rail was fitted on the stairs under a small adaptations grant totalling approximately £218.82

Mr H was visited and assessed by an Occupational Therapist, who recommended a level access shower was installed under a disabled facility grant with the local authority.

The outside steps were also inspected, and Care & Repair were able to install rails both side of the steps under their adaptations grant totalling approximately £319.50.

Mr H was already registered to our Priority Services Register at WPD but was encouraged to update his details since moving house, and his daughter was added as the main point of contact.
