Fund proves its value

At the end of last month, we launched our Energy Affordability Fund, which offers organisations that provide energy advice services the chance to bid for up to £20,000 funding to help them better support vulnerable and fuel poor customers.

Last year, we agreed to use our Fund to support the Derbyshire County Council Healthy Home programme to deliver a range of affordable warmth solutions throughout the winter.

Derbyshire County Council partnered with Derby City Council to make sure that the whole county could benefit from the funding. The programme involved providing in-depth face-to-face energy efficiency advice to 119 households and installing 37 new heating systems. Importantly, 66 vulnerable householders without access to the internet were placed on the Priority Services Register, because when the power goes off, so does your heating.

The programme also involved delivering presentations to over 300 health and wellbeing professionals across the county about the impact of living in a cold home on health.

Bill Purvis, Derbyshire Healthy Homes Programme Manager, said: “The support from Western Power Distribution was very welcome and provided a focus for our keeping warm and well in the winter campaigns.”

Karen McCalman, Social Obligations Officer at WPD said: “The success of the Healthy Home programme shows what can be done with a good idea and we were delighted to provide funding to them last year. Examples like this is exactly why we’ve created the Energy Affordability Fund and we’re excited to reviewing this year’s applications.”

The application deadline for the Energy Affordability Fund is 26 October so there’s still time to apply. To find out more and apply click here.
