Green shoots of sustainability

Children at Blackawton Primary School in Totnes begin to see the fruits of their labour thanks to support from local electricity company, Western Power Distribution.

The school has seen some fairly major changes lately both in the construction of new classrooms as well as the major development of their outdoor space.

Tom Pether, Head of Teaching and Learning at the school explained: “Over the past couple of years, we have started to encourage the children to think about the food miles we add to our food.

Showing them how to plant and care for produce from the garden to table will now be much easier, thanks to the donation of the poly tunnel from WPD.

It means we can get into the garden in all weathers to nurture and sustain the children’s interest as well as providing year round healthy, home grown food for our lunches.

This really is the icing on the ‘healthy’ cake of our garden development which we hope to share with other members of the local community too.”

The single span high sided poly tunnel is 14’ wide and 25’ long with hoop spacing’s and will provide Blackawton with a longer growing season and hopefully a bumper crop later this year.
