New rescue equipment aids lifesavers

Vale Surf and Life Saving Club which is based at Barry Yacht Club in South Wales has received new lifesaving equipment in time for the busy summer months ahead.

Although only formed in 2017, the registered charity already has over 80 members aged between seven and 50, and is very much a family club that helps to educate about coastal water dangers.

Now, with our proud support the club will be using a range of new training equipment like manikins and rescue tubes as part of its forthcoming voluntary beach patrol activity. WPD Projects Engineer Jack Lawthom, who is also a keen club member explained: “Our philosophy is to actively promote water safety and to educate and provide a public service. In addition we aim to improve skills and physical fitness and to above all have fun.”

The new equipment will be used for sea support and safety cover and was essential for members who are training or competing – the manikins were intrinsic to those obtaining beach lifeguard qualifications. Added Jack: “Last year we took part in three real life rescue situations including a cardiac arrest, an asthma attack and a swimmer in difficulties, all of which we were able to positively assist because of our first aid and rescue training.”
