Surf Telecoms award success

Castle Donington-based telecommunications provider, Surf Telecoms, has received a national award for innovation as part of a multi-million pound project to provide increased fibre-optic bandwidth to Midlands’ customers.

The award was in partnership with global telecommunications giant Transmode and presented at the Global Telecoms Business innovation awards at the Sheraton Park Hotel in Central London earlier this month.

This award recognised the innovative design of their fibre-optic network across the Midlands, offering a greater reach, capacity and performance in partnership with Transmode. This has resulted in the network providing an extremely stable, uncontended platform with the ability to achieve outstanding network data availability. The network has also been designed to offer scalability, meaning services can be provided quickly.

Surf Telecoms manages the operation and maintenance of a telecommunications network in the South West and South Wales stretching thousands of kilometres. This has enabled both publicly run and private organisations such as utility companies, universities and media businesses to send and receive large amounts of data consistently and securely.

In response to customer demand, last year Surf Telecoms upgraded its optical-fibre network in the Midlands supporting Surf’s parent company, Western Power Distribution (WPD), when it became the electricity distributor for the area.

With a geographic footprint extending to all of the major cities in the Midlands, the network provides WPD with the infrastructure to operate the electricity distribution network and maintain industry leading status. It enables them to closely monitor the distribution network, identify fault situations and reduce power cuts.

Richard Slane, Commercial Manager for Surf Telecoms, said: “Surf is very proud that the network has been recognised and is now very excited by the potential it offers across the Midlands, including Derbyshire, as it becomes more widely available.

“The aim of the new network was to enable us to deliver an infrastructure so that we could rapidly respond to customers’ needs, provide new services and increase bandwidth on demand. The award is recognition for the hard work and dedication of both ourselves and Transmode to improving services to customers.”
