28toZero – are we heading in the right direction to reach a fair Net Zero?

With just 28 years for the UK to reach its legally binding target of net zero carbon emissions is the industry heading in the right direction? That’s the question being posed by Western Power Distribution’s (WPD) latest event – 28toZero, which will be held at One Great George Street, Westminster on Thursday 30 June.

WPD’s Innovation Manager Yiango Mavrocostanti said: “28toZero is all about taking a step back and re-thinking where we are as an industry in our mission to achieve Net Zero.  Starting from the basics, we will be challenging fundamental concepts such as the suitability of the current market structure in facilitating Net Zero. We believe that it is our customers and the benefits to them that should be the focus when shaping the future of the industry and it is our mission to ensure that happens.  We are excited that we will be joined by leading industry experts to discuss this on the day. “We know that there are many challenges in achieving Net Zero. In our RIIO-ED2 Business Plan, which runs from 2023 to 2028, we are committed to ensuring customers can connect 1.5 million electric vehicles and 600,000 heat pumps to our network, while ensuring that no customer is left behind.  This cannot be achieved without innovation. In the 28toZero event, we will be discussing all the work we are doing to face these challenges by also exploring how everyone can benefit from heat flexibility and the role of energy efficiency. I’m proud that WPD, and my team in particular, fuelled by our passion for Net Zero is leading the way in driving innovation in the sector.”

28toZero will share insights into the work the Innovation team is doing to prepare for the future, including: The value of energy efficiency to distribution network operators and consumers How vulnerable customers should be protected during the energy transition Analysing the existing energy market and its suitability for achieving a fair net zero Flexibility and the decarbonisation of heat.
