£25m pledged for Nottingham power network

Western Power Distribution (WPD) is investing £25 million on its electricity network in Nottingham to manage future demand from the city and to further safeguard supply reliability.

WPD became the electricity distribution business responsible for the Midlands in April 2011, and this new initiative involves it building a new 132,000 volt substation in Stoke Bardolph.
Two new 132,000 volt electricity cables will also be laid to link the new substation to existing substations at Carlton and Basford.

The work improves the security of the electricity network infrastructure for 200,000 customers in the Nottingham area, by creating a more interconnected circuit of cables capable of supplying electricity to local businesses and homes.

The project started last week, with completion expected by mid-2014. “Our aim is to invest to maintain the reliability of electricity supplies for years to come,” said Mick Dunne, WPD’s Major Projects Distribution Manager.

“We are committed to providing a consistently high level of service to customers and will have spent over £2 billion on our network between 2010 and 2015.”

“While this work is being undertaken our aim is to keep any disruption to an absolute minimum. We have been speaking with Nottingham City Council to agree on the cable route which creates the least disruption for traffic flow around the city.

“Our intention is also to work on major junctions during off peak times and to keep customers who live along the route informed by letter. We have also been speaking with local bus companies about our plans.”
