Worcester to Malvern advanced warning

A £750,000 investment project to remove ageing pylons in Worcester is now underway.

WPD will replace five existing pylons which are situated in the gardens of homes in the city. This is part of a larger £2.3 million scheme to upgrade and reinforce the electricity network between Worcester and Malvern, and to prepare to meet an expected increase in demand.

Each pylon will take two days to replace and will be moved using cranes and a special pulley system to change the overhead wires.

For safety reasons, residents living in the affected properties – who will have pylons lifted over their houses or gardens – will be asked to leave their homes during the daytime while work is taking place..We have contacted each affected resident individually and will continue to keep them updated.

There will also be some short term disruption to traffic in the area. Click here to see the maps.

The work is planned for the following dates:

  • Pylon PWX 5 at Greenacres Road on 18 and 19 November 2021
  • Pylon PWX 6 at car park off Harrington Road on 20 and 21 November 2021
  • Pylon PWX 4 at Windsor Avenue cul-de-sac on 22 and 23 November 2021
  • Pylon PWX 3 at Windsor Avenue on 24 and 25 November 2021
  • Pylon PWX 2 at Comer Road on 29 and 30 November 2021

New overhead electricity wires will be attached once the pylons have been changed and this will be finished by 12 December.

Chris Mundy, WPD Project Engineer, said: “We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this essential work to future proof the power network for the people of Worcester.”

“We have contacted all the residents affected by the work and have liaised closely with local authorities to keep disruption to a minimum, wherever possible. When this work is complete, the people of Worcester will have a safer, more reliable and more efficient electricity network that is fit for the future.”
