£2 million investment for Mansfield power network

A major initiative to boost power supplies in the Mansfield area is due to begin in late August 2023.

As the electricity distributor for the region, we are committed to investing in our network to further improve supply reliability and customer service levels.

This £2 million initiative involves the installation of new underground cables between our substation on Westdale Road and a pylon/tower on Albany Close. The works will enable the connection of a new solar farm and replace cables that have reached the end of their working life, after being installed around fifty years ago. Once complete, this will help to further safeguard supply reliability to more than 30,000 customers in the Mansfield Woodhouse area.

Starting on 29th August, the first section of work will involve the installation of underground ducts on Albany Close and Albany Drive. ‘Give and take’ traffic management will be in place to enable the works to be carried out safely and it is anticipated this section will be completed by 20th December 2023.

From September 4th, 2023 there will also be 4-way traffic signals on Westdale Road. Work will progress on to Birding Street from 11th September and there will be a rolling road closure in place from junction of Westdale Road to the junction of Woodhouse Road until December 2023 (with access for residents and businesses).

From October 2023 until the beginning of November there will also be work taking place on Woodhouse Road. There will be a sectional road closure in place from the junction of Birding Street to the junction of Albany Drive with access to businesses and properties maintained.

Residents and landowners affected have been sent letters explaining the impact of the work, which could last for up to 18 weeks. Electricity supplies for customers will not be affected during this time.

“This investment will help to safeguard electricity supplies for both our existing and future customers in the area for years to come by improving the infrastructure and security of our network,” said James Bradley, Projects Team Manager for the area.

James added: “Our aim is to keep any disruption to an absolute minimum. We have worked closely with Nottinghamshire County Council to minimise the inconvenience in the area and reduce the length of disruption to motorists.”

We are responsible for overhead lines, underground cables and substations in the Midlands, the South West and South Wales, and will be investing more than £6 billion in our network over the next five years to enable the energy transition.
