60 Second Interview

Phil Dady – Hot Glove Linesman

What’s your career background?

I joined the company straight from school as an apprentice. I qualified as a linesman in 1988 and progressed into live line work three years later. I got the opportunity to join the hot glove team in 1998 and have been doing hot glove work ever since.

What does your role entail?

I work as part of a four man team repairing and maintaining overhead lines as well as carrying out new connection work. We predominantly carry out work on the high voltage network – often live. We wear special big rubber gloves and sleeves in addition to the usual personal protective clothing which enables us to carry out work while the lines are still live.

What do you enjoy most about the job?

It might sound cheesy but I love the job! Probably the best part for me is the people I work with - we’re a very close knit team despite being a mix of older and younger ages. There’s a lot of variety and to a certain extent we can manage ourselves. I also love being outdoors, although the weather can make it more challenging. We’ve all been drinking gallons of water in the recent hot weather!

What do you like to do outside of work?

I’ve got three grown up children, so their hobbies and interests have kept me busy over the years. I like to keep fit and enjoy going walking and biking with my wife. We recently had a walking holiday in the Peak District.
