Fuel poverty scheme

We have successfully expanded our fuel poverty schemes region wide, delivering £1.4m cost savings for customers.

As part of our social obligations commitments, we have listened to stakeholders and recognised that it is in a unique position to help tackle fuel poverty as there is sometimes a correlation between power cut vulnerability and affordability.

In 2014, we introduced the inaugural ‘Power Up’ fuel poverty scheme in partnership with the Coventry Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB). In the scheme, We refers Priority Service registered customers who would benefit from support with debt management advice and help switching energy tariffs as well as energy efficiency measures and advice.

We have replicated this scheme in each licence area, working with additional partners including the Energy Saving Trust and Centre for Sustainable Energy. A fourth scheme was introduced in Nottinghamshire in February. So far, 6,359 fuel poor customers have been supported through the schemes.

Alex Wilkes, WPD’s Stakeholder Engagement Manager said: “The partnerships are innovative for our industry and have been identified as best practice.”
