Local charities and groups awarded grants to develop community green spaces

More than 100 charities and community groups have been awarded grants in the latest round of our Community Matters funding. The Green Spaces grants will help groups to enhance and revitalise local green spaces, delivering a positive impact for their communities and the environment.

The £500,000 Green Spaces initiative supports the commitments in our ED2 business plan to protect and promote biodiversity and to work alongside the communities we serve to boost environmental sustainability. The fund has already donated £4.3 million to good causes since its launch in 2021.

One of the charities to benefit this time is the Dudley Stroke Association, which has secured £2,000 to create an inclusive allotment space for stroke survivors and their families. This innovative project aims to provide a nurturing environment that fosters physical and emotional well-being, offering therapeutic benefits and fostering a sense of community and connection.

Another organisation to receive funding is the Lincoln City Foundation, which has been awarded more than £9,000 towards its project to bring together local residents through engaging and rewarding activities, while creating an inspiring space for them to enjoy.

Alice Carter, Head of Healthier Communities for Lincoln City Foundation, said: “The grant from the Community Matters Fund will enable us to create a brand new green space. Funds will help us to transform an overgrown, unused area for local people and will also add value to our existing Lincoln City Foundation programmes.”

A third beneficiary is St Werburghs City Farm, an 18-acre hub in the heart of Bristol, which has been awarded nearly £10,000 to support its visionary ‘Wildlife and Wellbeing’ project. The ambitious project focuses on enhancing accessibility at a community nature reserve, installing accessible pathways, ramps, stairs, handrails and seating to create an environment where everyone can connect with, and enjoy, the beauty of the natural world.

Jill Russell, Environment Manager at National Grid, said: “At National Grid, we recognise our duty to protect and preserve the environment in the communities we serve. We are thrilled to support dedicated community organisations in their efforts to transform green spaces and promote environmental sustainability. By investing in these projects, we aim to deliver a lasting positive impact for our communities and enhance the wellbeing of local people. Together, we can make a real difference by preserving our natural surroundings and fostering a sustainable future."
