Major electricity investment project to begin in Bristol

A £400,000 project is due to start next week to replace post-war electricity infrastructure in Bristol.

The modernisation work by our teams will take place in Speedwell Road and will see the replacement of more than 4,400 metres of extra high voltage cables.

The work will start on Monday 13 June. The project is expected to take 12 weeks to complete, with excavations also affecting Whitehall Road from July.

Steve Blackwell, our Bristol Distribution Manager, said: “This is a major project, which has required months of preparation and liaison, to replace four underground cable circuits that are buried in the road up to two metres down.

“They were installed in 1948 and are coming to the end of their working life. Doing this necessary replacement work will maintain the reliability of the network and supplies to more than 40,000 customers.

“We understand that digging up a road on this scale will lead to disruption for residents and businesses and we apologise for the inconvenience this will cause.”

People in the area have been sent letters by us highlighting exactly where the work will happen and the timing of its different phases.

Various traffic systems will be in place during this major project, which is due to finish on 15 September.

Weekdays from Monday 13 June to Friday 24 June, between 7am and 7pm, there will be four way traffic control lights at Speedwell Road, Whitehall Road, Plummers Hill and Brook Road.

On the weekends of 18-19 and 25-26 June, three way traffic lights will be operating as the roundabout at Whitehall Road, Brook Road and Speedwell Road is partially closed.
