Our path to net zero is clear
We have outlined our roadmap to achieving net zero as a business by 2028 in our first environment strategy, published today.
We recently joined a number of leading UK and international companies to sign up to the Business Ambition for 1.5°C pledge and the United Nation’s Race to Zero campaign; following a verified science-based target of 1.5⁰ to limit the climate impact from our activities.
The environment strategy sets out our ambitions for achieving net zero through an array of activities, including our own decarbonisation of transport, with 89% of our commercial van fleet moving to decarbonised vehicles, such as electric vehicles, by 2028. This comes off the back of our recent announcement to invest an additional £60m to support the increase of electric vehicle chargers, domestic heat pumps and further green development schemes across our region.
The strategy focusses on decarbonisation, environmental responsibility and how our activities align with a number the UN sustainable development goals (SDGs) and the protection of the environment - all key concerns for the business and society in general. In the strategy, we commit to achieving zero waste to landfill by 2028 and reducing oil leaks from fluid-filled cables by 50%.
Jill Russell, WPD Environment Manager explained:
“We have listened to our stakeholders so lowering our own carbon emissions and minimising the impact of our own operations on the environment is of paramount importance.”
“We face a time of exciting change within the energy sector, with energy use and technology changing rapidly.”
“We are determined to drive the change and not adapt to it. Our plans will help us facilitate a swift roll out of electric vehicles, which is a key step in decarbonising transport across the UK.”
“Our Environment strategy will continue to develop, evolve and improve over time and we will continue to listen to stakeholder feedback to address future societal obligations and concerns.”
