Pupils seek recipe for success

Over 1,000 pupils in South Wales have been taking part in the regional rounds of the Urdd National Eisteddfod’s cookery competition, which is sponsored by ourselves.

The eisteddfod is Wales’ premier youth festival, held in different locations each year, and designed to celebrate the Welsh language and culture.

Regional winners Eluned Murray from Ysgol Gynradd Pont Sion Norton and Georgia Newman-Phillips from Ysgol Gynradd Coety are pictured with fellow pupils and Adjudicator John O’Sullivan and WPD’s Vicky Bannister.

The young cookery hopefuls have been vying for a place in the finals which will take place at the Eisteddfod when it is held in Pencoed, Bridgend between May 29 and June 3.

This year, regional rounds of the competition have been held in Mid Glamorgan where two finalists from youngsters aged between school years four and nine have been selected for the final.

Adjudicator John O’Sullivan praised the excellent standard of entries with recipes including such delights as cauliflower tabbouleh and lamb kofta meatballs.

For the final, the young cooks will compete in the Urdd’s cooking pavilion, overseen and judged by TV personality and Great British Bake Off runner up Beca Lyne-Pirkis, who was herself an Urdd competitor.

WPD’s Corporate Communication Manager, Paul Bishop said: “We have sponsored the Urdd Eisteddfod for many years, but this is the first time that we have supported the cookery competitions.

“We’re really excited to be involved in this new initiative, which also gives youngsters the chance to learn new skills and gain confidence in their abilities.”

Aled Siôn, Director of the Urdd Eisteddfod added: “The long-term support of WPD is deeply valued – we have been partnering for 13 years now which just goes to show the depth of their commitment. Support from local and national companies makes it possible for us to provide these exciting opportunities for children and young people. Good luck to the competitors and I look forward to seeing the results.”
